Pigmented skin lesions: can it be cancer?

Sun damage to the skin is a growing problem. Most people are much more aware of the importance of applying sun block to their skin. Unfortunately it is not just for prevention of wrinkles but also for skin cancer.

Skin cancer, however may not just be on the face and arms. Melanoma and other skin cancers can show up on the feet. People disregard them as freckles or moles. It is often missed even by doctors. That is why it is very important to have a “healthy level of suspicion” towards skin lesions, especially pigmented or colored skin lesions.

Feet do not often have skin cancer but when they develop they can be deadly. Malignant melanoma incidence is increasing. Early detection is essential for successful treatment, sometimes even for survival.

And it is simple to discover and eliminate many lesions through a biopsy. Often when people hear that a biopsy is recommended, they panic and postpone. But it is a simple procedure, usually done in the office within a couple minutes. A small piece of skin is taken with little pain and effort afterwards. The piece of mind when you know that the result is benign or, that you caught it early is worth the few minutes that it takes.

Don't postpone. Dr. Debra Young is board certified by the American Board of Podiatric surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgery. She can examine the lesion and give you advice. If necessary a simple biopsy can be done at that visit. Take responsibility for your health and wellness.
